A Surprise Proposal at Hôtel du Palais, Biarritz

Nate and Lily flew in from the US for a trip around Europe, with a stop in Biarritz. An ocean, a palace, and a ring Lily knew nothing about.

Nate got in touch not long before the big moment. He had an idea and one rule for me: Lily can't know.

One shot at it. One reaction nobody can ask her to redo. And a palace built for an empress as the backdrop.

This is the story of a surprise proposal at Hôtel du Palais in Biarritz. How we planned it, where we did it, and what I'd tell anyone thinking about a proposal in France somewhere other than under the Eiffel Tower.

Why Hôtel du Palais for a proposal

Because this place was built out of love. In 1854, Napoléon III decided to build a summer house in Biarritz for Empress Eugénie, who wanted to be closer to her native Spain. They called it Villa Eugénie.

After a fire in 1903, the building was rebuilt as a grand hotel, and its plan was drawn in the shape of an E. E for Eugénie. So when you kneel down here, you're adding a line to a love story that literally shaped the walls.

Then there's the rest:

  • The ocean at your feet. The hotel sits right above the Grande Plage. In the evening, the sun goes down over the Atlantic, and the light turns the brick and stone gold.

  • The only palace on France's Atlantic coast. It received the official French palace distinction in 2011, and reopened in June 2022 after a full renovation.

  • A bit of Hollywood. When the seawater pool opened in 1957, Frank Sinatra was invited and given cabana number 1. Americans tend to like that detail.

  • A team that knows how to keep a secret. I've worked here before, for Patricia and Victor's wedding. Discretion is part of the house style.

And honestly? It's not Paris. No crowd of fifty strangers filming you at Trocadéro. Just you two, the wind, and the waves.

How we planned it without her suspecting a thing

When Nate called, nothing was set in stone. And I didn't want it to be. You can't book the perfect moment in advance: the Atlantic decides the weather, and your nerves decide the rest. So I stayed flexible on the dates and open to whatever he had in mind.

A surprise proposal is mostly logistics. The emotion takes care of itself. Here's what we locked in beforehand:

  1. The spot. The Table du Bout du Monde, an experience offered by Hôtel du Palais: a small table tucked on a balcony right above the ocean. One of the most beautiful views in Biarritz.

  2. How invisible he wanted me. Some people want the photographer completely hidden, others want him close. I suggested a few strategies and let Nate pick the one that felt right.

  3. My hiding place. An outdoor staircase just below the terrace. I was there before they arrived.

  4. The signal. No text, no hand in the pocket. Just the sound of their footsteps on the gravel.

  5. Plan B. Flexible dates. If the sky or the mood wasn't right, we could simply move the day.

Then I heard the gravel. I let them walk past, followed at a distance, and photographed everything from the balcony above them. Close enough to see it all, far enough not to change a thing.

Once the key moment had passed, I came out and joined them.

I've learned this from years of street photography: the best pictures happen when people forget you exist. At a proposal, that's not a style choice. It's the whole job.

The spots we used, and where to propose in Biarritz

For Nate and Lily, it all started in one very special place.

The Table du Bout du Monde. The name translates as the table at the end of the world, and it lives up to it. A small table on a balcony, with nothing in front of you but the ocean. This is where he asked.

The balcony, the terrace, the gardens and the hotel's interiors. After the yes, we spent about an hour together, moving from the balcony to the terrace, then through the gardens and inside the hotel. I took the lead, but no stiff poses and nothing forced: just the two of them walking, laughing, staying close, while the emotion was still right there.

A quick note if you're planning your own: the Table du Bout du Monde is booked through the hotel, so talk to them first. The beach and the promenade below are open to everyone.

If the Palais isn't your thing, Biarritz has other places made for a proposal:

  • Rocher de la Vierge. A rock in the ocean, reached by a small footbridge. Go early morning: it gets busy fast.

  • Biarritz Lighthouse (Phare de Biarritz). High above the sea on Pointe Saint-Martin, with the whole coast in front of you. Beautiful at sunset.

  • Côte des Basques. Surfers, wide sand at low tide, and on clear days the Spanish coast on the horizon.

  • Port des Pêcheurs. A tiny fishermen's harbor in the heart of town. Colorful, intimate, very Basque.

  • Plateau de l'Atalaye. A quieter viewpoint above the old port, with fewer tourists.

Not sure which one fits you two? That's the first thing we figure out together.

Hiring a proposal photographer in Biarritz

If you're planning a surprise proposal in Biarritz or anywhere on the Basque coast, here's how it works with me.

  1. A call or message first. You tell me about her, about you two, about the idea you have (or don't have yet).

  2. The plan. We choose the spot, the time, the signal and the cover story. Depending on how discreet you want me, I suggest different strategies. And I stay flexible on dates: weather and nerves don't follow a calendar.

  3. The moment. I'm in place before you arrive. She won't spot me. I photograph the question, the reaction, the hug, and everything that comes after.

  4. Right after. About an hour of portraits. I guide you, but I never freeze you in stiff poses. My first goal is simple: that you have a good time. The natural pictures come from there.

  5. Your gallery. Delivered in a private online gallery, ready to share with family back home. Nate and Lily had theirs two days after the proposal.

Why me? I'm a documentary photographer first. My background is street photography, which is basically the art of being invisible and catching what people don't perform. In 2025, I was ranked among the top 10 wedding photographers in the world by Fearless Photographers. I live here, I know the light, the tides and the quiet corners.

It was great working with William! He was very responsive, detail-oriented, patient, and enthusiastic, and he went above and beyond. The pictures turned out great!

From proposal to wedding

A proposal is the first chapter. Sometimes I get to photograph the next ones too.

If Hôtel du Palais is already on your mind for the big day, have a look at Patricia and Victor's wedding at Hôtel du Palais: a civil ceremony at Biarritz town hall, a windy couple session in the hotel gardens, and dinner at La Rotonde facing the ocean.

And if your wedding happens somewhere else, in France or across the ocean, I travel.

That's how I like to work: same eyes, same discretion, from the first question to the last dance.
